Week 1

Assignment 1.2 (Reflection of Manuscript)

Reflection:

For this assignment, I choose to evaluate the Book of Kells by Edward Sullivan. This manuscript provides many vibrantly colored illustrations that contain the Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity (CRAP) design. For the purpose of this assignment, I wanted to focus on the Virgin and the Child illustration that is located in the Book of Kells.

The Virgin and the Child illustration uses a variety of contrasting colors in its artistic design. The artist repetitively uses the same colors throughout the illustration to tie in all aspects of the illustration. The vertical center alignment seems to split the Virgin and the Child. It seems to symbolize the past desires and loneliness are on the left of the vertical center alignment. On the right side, it seems to connect the child with the future happiness that will unfold. The proximity of all the people and angels surrounding the Virgin and the Child is appropriate, because everyone is watching over them. It seems like they are being protected from the six men on the left. The men on the left are looking away, but it seems as if they are up to no good. Everyone else seems to look concerned or be protectors of the Virgin and the Child.
